OK, this is really starting to irk me. For the past couple of days I've been trying to log onto the S-C.net FTP since I'm editing a chapter, and I kept getting the same message.
"The operation timed out"
.......So I figured my computer was acting up, or something, so for about 3 hours I'm trying to figure out what's wrong. (Which isn't saying much since the only thing I know how to do with FTP is login, upload, and download stuff.)
Then I downloaded one of those programs that allow you to connect to an FTP, (It's called WS_FTP) But I got the same "Operation timed out" message on that one too.
Hopefully someone here knows something about FTP, or a good place that does, so that I can get this problem solved. ^^;;

er, is the file you're trying to upload big? becasue sometimes when it's too big it says "operation time out" for me too, but then you just return to the place where you click "upload", selecte file, say okay, and when they ask you " resume, overwrite, cancel, ect" you say resume, until the fils is there.. at least that's what I do, I don't know if your FTP program works the same as mine ^^;; Otherwise, I have no idea.

The problem is I can't connect to the FTP in the first place. That's when I get the "Operation timed out" message.

Hey Carole, get either a DOS prompt (pre-2K) or a command window (2K/XP) going on your system. Then ping the IP address of the FTP server:
ping 123.456.789.012 (substitute the actual number of course. ^^;
If it says "response timed out" there, then it means that it's not your problem, it's somewhere either on the server end or on the network between you and there.
If you get a ping reply in a reasonable amount of time, then chances are the FTP server process is down on the remote system (i.e. something's not running that should be). Try connecting to them on the command line just to be completely sure it's not a negotiation problem with a GUI FTP (unless you're already using command line in which case never mind).
Anyway, it might not be your end's problem... will see if I can dig up the IP address in question and give it a shot from here and see what happens... back in a few...

Back with info... I got a ping timeout. That means that there are at least two points on the Internet which can't talk to it at the moment, which means it's more likely the server itself is down than that it's just a network routing problem.
Anyway, I don't think there's anything to change on your computer; just wait and hope it comes back... ^^;;;
How big is the stuff you're editing? If it's something you need to download I can't help you, but if it's something you need to upload, I could stash it somewhere in my university staff account and send Crisis a link to it if it was only needing to be there a couple days...

Thanks alot for the info Risu-chan ^_^
The chapter I'm editing is 4.79 MB. That would be great if you could host the file for Crisis to get. ^^

Well... there's an email size limit on my normal inbox, but I kinda begged and pleaded for an EWS account when EWS wanted me to do some SSH documentation specific to their setup and configuration, so I'll go send you mail from my EWS address instead of my normal one. Reply to that address with the file attached, and I can post it on EWS and get it to Crisis that way... (would've tried to do it on my normal account except I just found out it was over quota...)

Eeps! Sorry I didn't reply to this thread sooner. I've been kind of busy with my new summer job. XD (whoopee...I get to sit and catalog hundreds of Chinese books all day on a spreadsheet) Oh dear! Looks like the FTP isn't working. That FTP was for the server that used to host our site before we moved it, but the server went under. Bankrupt. T__T Good thing we moved our site before that happened.
I'll be setting up my high school ftp account for editors and translators soon. ^^ It only holds about 50 mb of space, but that should be enough for just transfering files back and forth.

Hey Carole - today the entire campus network has been making like a yoyo, so I haven't been able to actually CONNECT to it long enough to check for EWS mail or get a URL to Crisis. @_@ Will keep trying...
as you might imagine, since the entire campus network keeps cutting in and out, I came home to work over cable modem this afternoon rather than keep wondering which of the VPN testing timeouts I got were due to actual misconfiguration and which were due to the network problems... ^^;;;

Got your e-mails Risu-chan. Thanks again for hosting the file. ^^
Yep, 50 MB should be plenty.
